Google explained its policy on Spy Cars

On its European Public Policy Blog, Google shed some words of enlightenment and explanation how it officials roams around in special cars spying on everywhere. Officially known as “Google Street View Cars” these cars are thrust upon to collect Photos, local Wifi network data and 3-D building imagery. Below is shown how Google’s Global Privacy Counsel, Peter Fleischer has described company’s policy for different types of informations.

•“Photos: so that we can build Street View, our 360 degree street level maps. In addition, we use this imagery to improve the quality of our maps, for example by using shop, street and traffic signs to refine our local business listings and travel directions.

•WiFi network information: which we use to improve location-based services like search and maps.

•3-D building imagery: we collect 3D geometry data with low power lasers (similar to those used in retail scanners) which help us improve our maps.”

However, despite all this classification of data and clarification on data usage policy there always remains some fear that using technical data to link with geographical data as with respect to personal locations. Though, the information pull out by Google involves SSID (the network name) and the MAC address (device number) linking to human identifies without a great deal more effort which Google seems to integrating into.
