Raid on Gizmodo editor home under cloud of doubts

On the raid over his premises, Jason Chen, the Gizmodo editor about the iPhone issue on his blog and raised doubt about the credibility of the raid. According to the recent update computers belonging to the technology blogger have been put on hold for any further examination. According to his lawyers he is protected by Californian shield law. His lawyers are previewing the opinion whether the raids were legal as doubt expressed by his lawyers in San Francisco Chronicle.

The shield law states that journalists have the right to protect their unpublished material from examination. San Mateo county chief deputy district attorney Steve Wagstaffe told that he is looking into the matter and would soon arrive with jurisdiction over a legal memo later this week. And till then computers would not be examined by any mean or contest. The laptops, hard-drive and USB memory sticks belonging to Mr Chen are currently is in possession of Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team (React), the state’s high-tech crime taskforce that conducted the raid.

They did this search afterward Apple told about the theft of the phone. However, prototype was left out Apple software engineer Gray Powell at a bar and later prototype was published on Gizmodo website along with photographs. Earlier, in an interview with media Mr Wagstaffe had defended the raid, saying prosecutors had considered whether reporter shield laws applied to the case but decided to proceed. He also told that police knew the identity of the person who took the phone and that they had talked to him.
