Contrary to internet expansion in developed countries developed countries have better mobile phone penetration, usage and connectivity. Thus this led to success of SMS based social networking groups in developing counties. For example in India there is 10 to 1 mobile to PC ratio. However, scope of mobile social messaging can be ascertained from the fact that Mig33, a mobile social networking that includes VoIP calls, instant messaging, e-mail, text messaging and picture sharing has whopping 35 million registered users in South Asian market like Indonesia and India. And up to 3.5 million active users at any given period of time.

Mig33’s users pass on around I million virtual gifts every month and posts nearly 100 million messages a day or 1,000 messages every day. And Twitter is at just at its half mark with 50 million messages every day. Mig33 is eyening towards its virtual gift economy as a measure for earning as another model similar to its working pattern is a hit in China, Tencent QQ. As stated by Mig33, its Chinese mobile social application has 8% of over 500 million users are paying about $2 per month in virtual gifts and goods.

Mig33 is hoping to copy that pattern in markets like Indonesia, India, South Africa, Bangladesh, Kenya, and Bosnia. Its service is available globally and is optimized for 2,000 different mobile devices and models. To its application there are integrated social games, user owned groups, virtual gifting and avatars. Established in 2005, mig33 is backed by Accel Partners, Redpoint Ventures and DCM.
