Verizon 4G handsets to be released around mid-2011
Verizon Wireless is developing its new 4G wireless network using spectrum that it has procured in the 700MHz auction. As soon as tests are accomplished in the cities like Boston and Seattle, the commercial deployment of 4G would start. With the launch of 4G technology, the first equipments to use 4g are USB air cards which plug into laptops to provide prompt and fast Internet connections.
“We have not tested handsets yet,” Bill Stone, executive director of network strategy for Verizon Wireless told last month. “We expect the initial handsets will include CDMA. Not sure yet when they’ll start to be available, but as Dick (Lynch) said at the GSMA news event, many of the components to bringing LTE to market are moving along much more quickly than we had initially hoped.”
On the supplier side they are preparing integrated chip that can handle both 3G as well as 4G technologies. Another reason for LTE handsets having two chipset as for voice traffic there would be CDMA cellular network whereas the data traffic will use LTE. However according to Verizon real problem exists with providing 4G networks with existing billing and provisioning systems.
Despite this bottle neck the next generation wireless networks will encourage download and upload speeds that would make accessing the Web on smart phones much faster. The download speed in recent tests for LTE network displayed peak data rates of between 40Mbps and 50Mbps. However, the actual appearance of 4G can only be assessed after its launch after mid 2011.
