Internet, a fundamental right, concluded recently held survey

A recent survey conducted by BBC world services concluded that four people out of every five are in favor of access to internet as a fundamental right. This survey included around 27,000 adults across 26 countries and get very exciting response about it and mostly in favor of internet. Countries, like Finland and Estonia have already mentioned Internet as fundamental right to their citizens. This has corresponded to the feelings of International bodies like UN for the Universal net access.

Dr Hamadoun Toure, secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) also come to the favor of right to communication and termed internet as being the most powerful source of knowledge and learning as ever created. This survey also highlighted various issues over extent of government intervention into the regulation of internet. As respondents from South Korea and Nigeria felt that government should never be indulged into the regulation of internet. However, Chinese and European were completely against that move.

In UK, nearly 55% people believe that there should be some sort of regulation on internet. This survey has come at the wake of when UK government is trying to push through its controversial Digital Economy Bill. This bill can allow the universal broadband in the UK by 2012 along with “three strikes rule” as a law. This rule will ensure regulators in UK with powers to disconnect or slow down the net connections of the users of illegal file-sharers. On the line of UK, other countries like France are also considering to follow those rules.

In the survey, the fact come to the foray is that 87% of internet use should be considered as “fundamental right of all people” And 70% people not using internet expressed their feeling to get connected with internet. Nations like Mexico, Brazil and Turkey come into the favor of net being as fundamental right. And facebook has propounded to this objective of right to Internet. The research otherwise also showcased internet being as vital part of one’s life. As citizens in Japan, Mexico and Russia told that they can not live away without internet.
