YouTube applying speech recognition technology for video captions

In an innovative approach and effort towards hearing impaired and deaf people Goggle owned YouTube is preparing tens of millions of videos with captions with the help of its speech recognition technology. Earlier captions were only small amount of content. “A core part of YouTube’s DNA access to content” told the You Tube product manager Hunter Walk.

In start the captions would apply only to English language, however, in coming months the videos in other languages would also be added and uploaded to the list.  However, last year YouTube distributed automatic captions to a handful of its partners including the University of California, Berkeley, Yale University and National Geographic.

On this development Google engineer Mike Cohen told, that this technology already exists from 50 years and now in present form is good enough to be used on larger scale.  However, otherwise, Google engineer Ken Harrenstien told that there is some problem with technology, yet it is capable to be applied in real situation. He was working on the project for last five years and being a deaf since his childhood this project has special place at the core of his heart. And reaction to the addition of these captions is more relevant and appraisable by people who needs this the most.  Students from the California School for the Deaf, in Freemont, became a part of such video
