Microsoft addressing 17-year-old bug in next security update
After the security threat at IE6, the another development on the security front from the Microsoft is patching up of a 17 year old bug that is existing in the OS from the period of DOS operating system. The bug noticed for the first time at Windows NT 3.1 has been carried to the every version of widows that appeared since then. This month, the security update would tackle 25 holes in Window out of which five are termed as to very “critical”.
This bug in the Widows OS was found by Google security researcher Tavis Ormandy in January 2010 and let even newer versions of Windows to run even old programs. Mr Ormandy thus research out method to exploit this utility in Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and 2008 as well as Windows Vista and Windows 7.
As in terms of security updates for October 2009, was the largest update that handled as far as 34 weaknesses. In aftermath of attack on Google, many other cyber criminals have also started looking opportunity into that loophole. During this week, a researcher also found vulnerability in Internet Explorer that Microsoft assured to tackle in future date in its security bulletin.
