Google exit, Chinese are indifferent to the development

Submitted by admin on Friday, 5 February 2010No Comment

Against the expected lines, there is hardly any furor about exit of search engine giant Google from China among internet users in China. The country which has nearly 384 million Internet users did not receive much complaint about the development at China’s consumer rights agency as opposite to the complaints registered in thousands in single day when online fantasy game “World of Warcraft” was  barred in a legal development .

Most of the Chinese are of the opinion, if google leaves us than there are other search engines too and they agree though google results are of international level yet they can be obtained from Chinese local search engine, Baidu. This reaction of Chinese internet populace is concerning for Google as 61.5 percent Chinese online population is under 30 and Google failed to generate any interest among China’s wired teens and 20+ population.

This all discussion is over here, because, a few days back Google threatened to shut down its Chinese search engine Google.cn on the cyber attacks as generated from china. It is interesting to note that a few people paid floral tribute at Google headquarter and other few joined “Don’t Go Google” slogans.  The problem arises for the Google is that it failed to generate support in the country that has nearly 3.2 million registered Web Sites offering politically approved news in China and variety in form of shopping to music downloads.

Though many social media sites like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter are banned in China, yet there local substitutes like Youku and Tudou are available for videos, Kaixinwang and Renren for social networking, Sina.com, the largest Internet portal for a Twitter-like micro blogging site. Hence, it could be understood after this much offering from the Chinese government, the Chinese population would hardly care for Google exit or any such development.
