How educators are using away Social Media Technology

As social media has paved path into the various sectors of society and making its presence felt over there, education, an area also cannot be left aloof from its specter of influence. And for many a good reasons, it could be utilized over traditional medium of disseminating knowledge and learning. Of the most known reasons for hampering of education is reduction in educational budgets, lack of infrastructure and hardly motivated students.

Therefore, some reformist educational experts are using social media to overcome those difficulties. Social Media Technologies like Twitter and Skype are very broadly used for a good number of purposes and utilities in education and especially for team-based education. Following are some of the prominent social media tools which are used for respective purposes of social media optimization with respect to education and learning.

  • Starting with education revolution, it has been started with Skype at Marquette University, where Spanish students are making themselves adapted in foreign language skills on a web cam chats with their English learning counterparts in South America.   Skype has provided the highest level of satisfaction in terms of increase in motivation for student as well as educators.
  • Other Social Media Device that is making impressive mark with the coming age of social media is Students Mobile. As for against the popular and prevailing trend schools banning mobile phone the Wiregrass High School has adopted totally different approach to the cause of learning as it is integrating mobile phones into its educational curriculum. With this new approach students can exchange questions and answers with their teachers through SMS and can browse classroom blogs for additional instruction.
  • The next innovative approach to learning is Homework Tweet that is used by universities internal e-mail systems and message boards. As these e-mail systems are hardly checked out by students for update. Therefore as a rectification to the problem, the teachers at, Leicester University in the UK, turned Twitter for an outside class collaboration. At the University, Students were provided with an iPod touch and were given instructional materials and to make academic related Twitter calls. Soon a community with @replies and hashtags flourished between tutors, participants.
