Google Sites very soon is coming up with technical upgrade which includes providing templates for users without any technical background to create web sites with a degree of functionality in terms of page layouts, adding links for navigation and embedded gadgets.

These templates are provided for intranets, project sites, team sites, employee profile pages and other sites that can be used within the enterprise. These templates have services similar to as offered by Sharepoint.

Though Google is trying to strike at Microsoft, yet it needs to reach at certain level to compete with technical aspects as present with share point. There is also a basic difference between Microsoft and Google. Microsoft is a document centric organization therefore Sharepoint uses file system architecture and companies with share point uses web interface to share their documents.  Contrary to it the approach of Google is entirely web based.  Here documents are web pages and each document is a link not a file. When any document is uploaded to Google its get converted into its own unique URL. Google believes in faster sharing of information and current features of Google Sites are aimed towards that goal.
