Facebook got domain for Iran after UN intervention
The journey of Facebook to its present status goes back to the year 2005, when it was the Facebook.com and company had to purchase the Facebook.com domain for $200,000 and presently Facebook owns Facebook domain for every country, however, it somehow left out Facebook.ir, the top level domain for Iranian websites.
And it was the circumstances, after Iran election that made Facebook to think a while to own that domain, but has to seek help from the United Nations to have that domain, as an Iranian Majid Karimian of Yazd gave up the domain after he was instructed to do. According to the man, he wanted to sell out books from that domain but had to quit the domain after he lost its claim with U.N’s World Intellectual Property Organization. The U.N agency denied right to Ghannad and transferred ownership to Facebook.
But, this is surprising to learn that United Nation can intervene in issues like this and domain is useless as long as has been blocked by Iran on the pretext of censorship.
