India employing latest-technology to develop biometric based ID cards
At a time, when every country is trying to test new ideas and evolve new measures to deal with menace of terrorism, India is no far behind in this area as it is on plan to issue its 1.2 billion citizens with biometric-based ID cards, connected online. The project is already handed over to India’s recently founded Unique Identification Authority which is shouldered with responsibility to go to bottom of affairs regarding 20 existing proof of identity, including birth certificates to ration cards. And not a single proof among all these is accepted universally that at a times, create ample problems.
There are many other reasons to start this card, as a very big section in government machinery believes that this will help to fight with corruption and verification of eligibility to state services more credible. Other crucial issues like, criminal activities, terrorism and illegal immigration can be checked after issuing this card. On a cost of nearly £3bn The Unique Identification Authority would be responsible for “gathering and electronically storing” the details about already issued cards. And Nandan Nilekani, the co-founder of Infosys who is the head of all this exercise, wants this database to be available online.
