Twitter ensuring flow of information from Iran
As the stiff resistance posed by protesters in Iran against the rigging of presidential elections and Iranian administration’s strict measures to blow off resistance by tabbing the media coverage, media, world over is depending on micro-blogging sites like Twitter for update of situation in Teheran and other Iranian cities.
As reported, yesterday, US State Department asked Twitter to delay its scheduled site maintenance to ensure flow of information from Teheran uninterrupted. However, Twitter did not make any official confirmation to US administration request, however agreed that it delayed the maintenance to ensure uninterrupted flow of information from Tehran. State Department spokesman Ian Kelly approved in a media interaction on June 16 that the administration is monitoring networking sites like Twitter to receive information from Iran on status quo.
He further added, “This is about the Iranian people. This is about giving their voices a chance to be heard. One of the ways that their voices are heard is through new media. ‘The Washington Post, quoting an Iranian-American activist in Washington, reported tweets from a handful of students is very helpful in carrying away information outsides Iran.
US President Barack Obama was critical of Iran’s blocking the flow of information to the outside world he said, “It is for the Iranian people to decide about their future. This is not about us. This is about Iran. Having said that, of course, I think it is very — or we think as a government that it is very important that the universal right of people to express themselves peacefully, that this right has to be respected. And of course, we condemn any acts of violence that led to the deaths of these demonstrators.’
