Summer Programs - Why Should You Go?

In school days your summer months would have passed by very quickly than you would have imagined it to be. You just feel that your summer days skip so quickly when compared to your school days. During the summer you ought to learn a lot of things for yourselves. Learning is entirely different during summer months. Summer is really special as it can’t come soon but it will end very quickly. Your summer days are usually filled with lots of dreams and passions. You would develop new interests and redefine your passions in your way at your own pace.

Summer in a high school is definitely interesting and exciting. You can very well compare the three summers of the high school as the three beans provided to Jack in a fairy tale about the beanstalk. Jack plants his beans leisurely in his garden and it grows out really big that you can never think. Out of curiosity he climbed to reach the other end of the magical bean. He climbed, climbed and climbed but still couldn’t reach the other end of the beanstalk. But atlast with his mother’s approval he climbed till the end and found the golden egg. Similarly summer in a high school would turn out to be really effective if planned and used well. Indeed summer is a real adventure for those who make use of it.

Summer is really adventurous and benefits of the same are plenty. You will get to know who you are, find out the opportunities that is in store for you, to dig out the talents hidden in you, to make yourself feel more confident of yourself than you have ever thought, to find out that you are capable of more than what you thought yourself to be, to find out that your fellow people also hold the same dreams and fears that you never of sharing with others, to mix with some other culture, to work as a team, to overcome the challenges put forth, to increase you view or knowledge about the world, to face different questions on cultural and personal identity, and most important of all coming out of your comfort zone and thinking broadly and identifying yourself as a great leader are all really priceless achievements.

And these in turn lead to residual benefits. You will get a wider exposure and develop cross cultural behavior. You will start thinking more in a wider angle and become a very thoughtful person and an interesting person with wide variety of interests within you which will help you in getting college admissions. You will develop a greater sense of self confidence and have a clear idea about your learning and what you want to become in your life or how you want to lead your life. You self confidence will help you manage the peer pressures, loneliness, and the negative feeling of being trapped into something. You will be better equipped to deal with the transitions in your life – high school to college – from being dependent to independent – and deal with the unexpected realties of your life.

Besides all these do think you will develop all the interests that you have ever liked to do during summer? How many do you think would you bump into? Lets see some reasons to participate in summer programs:

Change in your perspective

Involving yourself in another walk of life is not simple; though it is really helpful for you as you will come to know the real complexities of life and gives you a better understanding of the world. You would also help others overcome it and thus you make yourself a more capable person, able to tackle any complex problems that may come up in any point of your life. This change in perspective that you brought home from intense service camps in your summer would really be of great help and gives a broader idea and thinking.

Richard Webb, the founder of ProPeru, gives his idea on this. He says,

“Students returning very often describe to me as they found a real sense of what is important and what is not. They have found certain interpersonal experiences which they had in their previous years are of no significance to them now. They have found a new sense of peace and balance as a result understanding how silly their previous issues of hunger and poverty were to them now. And now they have found joy which they have seen this summer.”

Mad Run for College

After you get in to a college you may have to leave your friends and family and you may have to walk a path that is unfamiliar but at the end you will be a better person. You will leave behind all the comforts of your home to a far away unknown place to gain control of your career and make your destiny. You will face challenges in all ways, emotionally, physically, mentally, academically, culturally and socially. You may have to cover up your weaknesses and you may have to find new strengths that will help you in the long run. A summer program will help you give such an experience well before college. And the different activities will help you take up challenges put forth easily and give way to realize and learn the best way to manage such stress and unexpected and unsupported transitions in your life.

Trying On a Life for Size

Summer programs will definitely help you explore your interest and make you a stronger and a better person. They also provide activities that will test your interests, patience and commitment. There are also chances for you to go to exotic places and meet people bound from different regions and different walk of lives. This will generally help you nurture your skills in a proper way that you would never think would be possible at home.

Redefine Yourself

Summer programs will always be of great help to bring out the unseen side of you. They will put you through a series of challenges that will make you work in a group and thus help you become a good team player or probably a leader too. They will test your skills at effective communication and risk managing capabilities. Summer programs would help you reinvent yourself. They are definitely going to enhance your skill set and mould you into a new person with different new personal traits – shaping yourself emotionally, mentally, physically and socially. If you feel inferior or typecast, pigeonholed then summer camps would for sure change your way of thinking.

Push Personal Limits

Are you afraid of pushing your limits and facing your challenges, never let yourself down. Summer programs are not meant for de-motivating any person but rather build the new skills that have never found in him. You need not have to fear about the failure. There are student like you who had been worried about their limits but rather they came out with flying colors. So never discourage yourself.

It’s all Fun

At the end it’s all fun to get in touch with so many people from different places with different background. There is no place for caste or creed. Instead of spending your summer on coast of Alaska you can spend a meaningful yet powerful summer at Peru with all new people. You can definitely the new person in you. Everyone who have taken up this program would have gone to the dirtiest, hungriest, hottest, and most exhausting place – but it would have been the happiest they had ever had. So you can the one too. Why just waiting?
