Social Media bringing activism into the Non-Profit World

Social media has come away at a very long path imbibing development and changes in its designs and message delivering technology. Four years back social media sites were considered as light hearted fun activities; however, with change of time now every one is thronging towards social media sites as a platform for promotional as well as public relations activities. Now non-profit organizations are using Social Media as a method to propagate their theme and ideas. Social media is working in favor of non profit world in following manners.

  • Embroidering and Making Relations Participating: For Non-profit organizations social media has come as a method to propagate their ideas and increase their community and group. Social media sites have also been come as platform for non profit organizations as fund raising activities.
  • Developing Small Social Groups Without any Control from Mother Organizations: Social media helps organizations to grow by giving birth to the subsidiary alliances by creating joining and growing groups around them on the issue they are working for.   The biggest advantage with these types of groups is that they survive in liberal and free environment without being attached to the mother group except for thought and ideas. Sometimes, are really very helpful in developing a new concept and giving whole new direction to the movement.
  • Facilitating Collaboration and Crowd Sourcing: Social media has come up as a great tool for people in non-profit organizations to connect, collaborate and distribute information outside organizational structure in quick and inexpensive manner. They share their ideas with their supporter with crowd sourcing, feedback and content. WeAreMedia, a wiki project where more than 100 non- profit organization shared their training manual through blogs, Twitter and Facebook.
  • A Media for Cultural and Social Shift:  As the non profit organizations at their basic are attached fundamentally to social structure, therefore adopting a social media group for propagation of cause, sometimes require culture shift to make it a success. Social Media has come up very effectively in changing cultures, flatting hierarchical structures; speed up decision making process and improving program and services.
